For Immediate Release (April 15, 2009)
Hide & Seek Foundation, the leading national non-profit organization devoted to Lysosomal Disease research and education, is opening the doors to a second-hand furniture store in beautiful Belmont Shore. With 100 percent of the proceeds going to benefit research through Hide & Seek Foundation, the organization hopes that their selection of quality used home furnishings at affordable prices will raise disease awareness while helping to beautify the community.
"Everyone deserves a beautiful home environment," Hide and Seek Boutique founder Stephanie Lyn says. "The condition of my home environment was crucial for my sanity when dealing with my son’s diagnosis and when setting up and dealing with the creation of the Hide & Seek Foundation. I just want to spread that idea throughout the community while educating the public about the illness."
Lysosomal Disease affects as many as one out of every 5,000 babies born in the US each year. This largely-overlooked condition is caused by a cellular mutation that renders a vital cell protein ineffective. That protein then disrupts the functioning of the cell's "recycling center," causing the cells to store products destined for breakdown. The effects of this fatal disease vary according to the particular protein affected, but include: developmental delays, seizures, mental retardation, dementia, deafness, blindness, bone and skeletal deformities as well as liver, spleen, lung and heart problems.
